A Rare Jewel

A Burma ruby is the most exquisite of jewels
And unlike others, it requires no heat to enhance,
A wonderful accident of nature is such a stone –
Just a little polish makes the fiery gem sparkle and dance.

There shone a beautiful and rare light when I happened upon you,
Glinting in the sun, just as intense as such an accidental gem,
And long I stood, pondering this exquisite treasure I had found,
A rough-hewn jewel cut and polished, for which I thank Him.

For her laugh was a musical score written by God’s very own hands,
And her gentle touch was like the spring rain urging flowers to grow,
Her nurturing spirit ready at moment to provide comfort and shelter,
Her words spoken with wisdom, ever encouraging when one felt low.

Dignity - she wore it like a fine silk dress or a pair of expensive shoes,
Her caring embrace was boundless and her hand extended to any in need,
She taught us to love ourselves and to recognize the worth that lies within,
She was more noble than the finest of jewels, and planter of that mustard seed.

Many women, well they sparkle and shine like jewels at first glance
But as time passes truth emerges sometimes ugly and cruel
But Aunt Thedra your light shines on, though you are no longer here
And for me, you are more precious than the finest of any rare jewel.
